How to Clean Your Invisalign Retainers {5 Ways}

Build-up on Invisalign trays and retainers can definitely happen quickly if you are not cleaning them correctly. Here are 5 ways to keep them shiny and bright!

Toothbrush & Toothpaste

This is the most straightforward technique. Simply use your regular toothbrush and toothpaste and scrub away! I like to use an electric toothbrush, such as Sonicare, because I feel like it cleans better than a manual. Just remember to hold the retainer one side at a time and DO NOT FLEX IT or you could break it in half.

Soap & Water

You can use any soap you like to clean with, but I have found dish soap seems to get in there the best. Remember to rinse all the soap off before you put in your mouth to avoid a soapy aftertaste!

Denture Cleaner Tabs

These are cleanser tabs that dissolve in water and you can buy these at any drug or grocery store. I have also seen specific “retainer cleaners” but the denture tabs seem to work just as well (and are much less expensive). Soak for about 15 minutes.

This doesn’t clean quite as well as the other options but it will definitely freshen them up in a pinch. Soak for 5-10 minutes for a nice clean taste!

Baking Soda & Vinegar (& Peppermint Oil)

This homemade recipe is probably my favorite technique – and its cheap too! Mix equal parts baking soda with distilled vinegar and let it bubble away on your Invisalign for about 15 minutes. Add a drop of peppermint oil to for the extra minty touch. You will really see a difference in clarity with the baking soda and vinegar!
